Abstract:
»The chapter is dedicated to the description and analysis of Soviet Lithuania’s experience of violence against women from Stalinism to the late Soviet period. It includes both sexual and domestic violence but also covers such related topics as economic violence. Also, the chapter is based on archival material (such as court files and verdicts) and interviews: (a) with women, who experienced violence, (b) with the representatives of the criminal prosecution system. The central focus is these questions: How was the “ideal victim” of violence against women imagined in Soviet-occupied Lithuania? How did this image relate to gender roles and stereotypes? And what were the experiences of real victims?«
